FBI Evidence Response Team intern Chloe Fine, 27, finds herself forced to confront her own dark past when her troubled twin sister needs her help—and when a body turns up dead in her small, suburban town.

Chloe feels life is finally perfect as she moves back into her home town, and into a new house with her fiancé. Her career with the FBI looks promising, and her wedding is on the horizon.

But, she learns, all is not as it seems in suburbia. Chloe begins to see the underside—the gossip, the secrets, the lies—and she finds herself haunted by her own demons: her mother’s mysterious death when she was 10, and her father’s imprisonment.

And when a fresh body is found, Chloe soon realizes that her past, and this small town, might hold the key to solving both.

An emotionally wrought psychological suspense with layered characters, small-town ambiance and heart-pounding suspense, NEXT DOOR is book #1 in a riveting new series that will leave you turning pages late into the night.

About the book

Chloe Fine is a trainee on the FBI research team and returns to live in her small hometown with her boyfriend. Here she meets her old high school friends and she soon realises that gossip is going around in a small town. She also lost her mother when she was 10 years old, apparently killed by her father who is, in fact, serving his sentence in prison. Chloe has a twin sister, Danielle, who has never been the same after her mum’s death and she’s jumping from relationship to relationship, but it seems that she has met the man of her life. Obviously, as soon as Chloe arrives in her hometown, a corpse is found, and it could be the key to discovering what really happened to her mother.

In the cornfields of Nebraska a woman is found murdered, strung up on a pole, the victim of a deranged killer. It doesn’t take long for the police to realize a serial killer is on the loose—and that his spree has just begun.

Detective Mackenzie White, young, tough, smarter than the aging, chauvinistic men on her local force, finds herself called in grudgingly to help solve it. As much as the other officers hate to admit it, they need her young, brilliant mind, which has already helped crack cold cases that had left them stumped. Yet even for Mackenzie this new case proves an impossible riddle, something the likes of which she—and the local force—have ever seen.

With the FBI called in, together, an intense manhunt ensues. Mackenzie, reeling from her own dark past, her failed relationships, and her undeniable attraction to the new FBI agent, finds herself battling her own demons as her hunt for the killer takes her to the darkest places of her mind. As she delves into the killer’s mind, obsessing over his twisted psychology, she finds that evil truly does exist. She only hopes it will not be too late to extricate herself from it, as her entire life collapses around her.

As more bodies turn up dead and a frantic race against time ensues, there is no way out but to find him before he kills again.

A dark psychological thriller with heart-pounding suspense, Before He Kills marks the debut of a riveting new series—and a beloved new character—that will leave you turning pages late into the night.

About the book

Second book that I “read” by the author, I didn’t like the first one that much, because I listened to it instead of reading it, but I liked this a little more even if I found some defects (or rather things that I didn’t like). A woman’s body is found in a cornfield tied to a pole and, of course, the police investigate. Among the policemen there is also the young Mackenzie White who because of her youth, especially because she is a woman, isn’t weel seen by her colleagues. Will she still be able to solve the case despite all this? And not only that, the FBI arrives to lend a hand and perhaps only the agent in charge understands her value.

55 year old empty nester—and freshly retired FBI agent—Kate Wise finds herself drawn out of her quiet suburban life when her friend’s daughter is murdered in a home invasion—and she is implored to help.

Kate thought she left the FBI behind after 30 years as their top agent, respected for her brilliant mind, tough street skills and her uncanny ability to hunt down serial killers. Yet Kate, bored with the quiet town, at a crossroads in life, is summoned by a friend she can’t turn down.

As Kate hunts the killer, she soon finds herself at the forefront of a manhunt, as more bodies turn up—all suburban moms in perfect marriages—and it becomes apparent there is a serial killer stalking this quiet town. She unearths secrets from her neighbors she wishes she never knew, discovering that all is not what it seems in this picture of model streets and neighbors. Affairs and lying are rampant, and Kate must sift through the town’s underbelly if she will stop the killer from striking again.

But this killer is one step ahead of her, and it may end up being Kate who is in danger.

About the book

This is the first audiobook that I listen to (no, I won’t say “read”) and it will be the last, because I still believe that they are useless (at least for me, they are good for the ones who have eye problems). But first let’s talk about the book and to say the truth I really enjoyed it, I wasn’t able to fully appreciate it,though. I also own the ebook, so maybe I will read it again in the future.

The main character is a retired FBI agent, Kate Wise, a 55 year-old-woman who doesn’t know what to do now that she isn’t working full time. Widow, mother of a woman who is about to become a mother herself, member of a club of 4 retired women, she isn’t able to find her way now that she isn’t shooting at criminals anymore. So when the daughter of one of the women of the club is killed, she tries to investigate since the mother and friend asks her to.
