For FBI Special Agent Smoky Barrett, the wedding of one of their own was cause for celebration. Until a woman staggered down the aisle, incoherent, emaciated, head shaved, and wearing only a white nightgown.

No one knows who she is or where she's come from or why she's chosen to appear in a church filled with law enforcement agents. Then a fingerprint check determines that the woman has been missing for nearly eight years that once she was someone's wife, someone's mother and a cop. Imprisoning her in a dark cell, depriving her of any contact with the outside world, her enigmatic captor was a man she didn't know and who seldom spoke, who punished her only when she failed to follow his most basic instructions designed to keep her alive.

Cold, businesslike, seemingly indifferent to his victims, he's a predator with an M.O. as terrifyingly inscrutable as any Smoky has ever encountered. As she fits together the pieces of what remains of his victim's fractured life, a chilling picture emerges of a killer every bit as calculating, masterful, and professional as Smoky and the team she leads a professional psychopath who doesn't take murder personally and never makes a mistake.

There's a reason he let one of his victims go free. And by the time Smoky pierces the darkness of his twisted mind, it may cost her more than she can bear to lose to escape. For a trap snapped closed the moment she took this case too much to heart.

About the book

The start is in slow motion, then the pace picks up. I read the first two chapters in two days (ok maybe the first 4), then I could not put it down.

I read this book in English because kobo does not have the translated version in Italian (not bad, I can read a whole book in English without having problems) and I must say that I like the style of the author. Of course, even in Italian it is his style but being translated, I do not know how much structure the translator changes, so reading a book in English has been different for once.

Kidnapped just blocks from home after a romantic evening with her boyfriend, Jared, she woke up to find herself at the mercy of a depraved serial killer. Imprisoned and tormented for months by the maniac she came to know as Spiderman, Lizzy narrowly escaped, the only one of his victims to survive. But Spiderman escaped too, outwitting police and cursing Lizzy to spend her life looking over her shoulder…

Fourteen years later, Lizzy is a private investigator who teaches self-defense to teenage girls in her free time. She does what she can to help others protect themselves and to forget the horror of her ordeal, yet fears she will always be known as “the one who got away.” Then she receives a phone call from Jared, now a special agent for the FBI, with grim news. The killer has resurfaced, this time with a very specific target—Lizzy. And he’s made it clear that she will not escape him again. So begins a chilling game of cat-and-mouse, a terrifying, heart-pounding hunt that only one will survive.

About the Book

I hate spiders! I wish everyone on Goodread.com would stop posting spider images in the comment section, but no! Anyway, I loved the book!

So the main character was victim of a crime and I usually don’t like that, even if I like series like Kate Burkholder and Smoky Barret, but I liked this in the book. So I’m very picky when main characters are victims, too.

This was the summer he discovered what he wanted at a gruesome museum of criminology far off the beaten track of more timid tourists. Visions of torture inspired his fantasies like a muse. It would prove so terribly fulfilling.

The bodies of four men have been discovered in the town of Bradfield. Enlisted to investigate is criminal psychologist Tony Hill. Even for a seasoned professional, the series of mutilation sex murders is unlike anything he's encountered before. But profiling the psychopath is not beyond him. Hill's own past has made him the perfect man to comprehend the killer's motives. It's also made him the perfect victim.

A game has begun for the hunter and the hunted. But as Hill confronts his own hidden demons, he must also come face-to-face with an evil so profound he may not have the courage—or the power to stop it...

About the Book

Apparently a TV show was made from this series, but I didn’t know… that’s quite strange for a TV addict like me.

The book starts in Italy, my country (quite surprised because I didn’t know about it or didn’t remember, I do buy books like they are water and leave them in my e-Reader while I finish others) and I didn’t know it was so old (likewise, I don’t look at the publishing date when I buy books), it still had Lira as currency! Moreover it still had floppy disks and some of you may even not know what they are…

Everyone in Painters Mill knows the abandoned Hochstetler farm is haunted. But only a handful of the residents remember the terrible secrets lost in the muted/hushed whispers of time—and now death is stalking them, seemingly from the grave.

On a late-night shift, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is called to the scene of an apparent suicide—an old man found hanging from the rafters in his dilapidated barn. But evidence quickly points to murder and Kate finds herself chasing a singularly difficult and elusive trail of evidence that somehow points back to the tragedy of that long ago incident. Meanwhile, Kate has moved in with state agent John Tomasetti and for the first time in so long, they're both happy; a bliss quickly shattered when one of the men responsible for the murders of Tomasetti’s family four years ago is found not guilty, and walks away a free man. Will Tomasetti be pulled back to his own haunted past?

When a second man is found dead—also seemingly by his own hand—Kate discovers a link in the case that sends the investigation in a direction no one could imagine and revealing the horrifying truth of what really happened that terrible night thirty-five years ago, when an Amish father and his four children perished—and his young wife disappeared without a trace.

About the Book

I was so taken by the tale that I totally forgot about the Tomasetti’s part of the story…

This is the sixth book of the Kate Burckholder Series, a series that I particularly love.

Fourteen year old Billy Hochstetler wakes up in the middle of the night and with his brother, goes downstairs to investigate. He finds his parents at the mercy of two “Englisher” gunmen demanding cash. His father, Willis, is shot and killed. Billy and his four siblings are locked in the basement. Billy manages to escape, but his siblings aren’t so lucky and die in a fire. His mother, Wanetta is kidnapped and never seen again. This happened 35 years ago.

Amelia Sachs is hot on the trail of a killer. She's chasing him through a department store in Brooklyn when an escalator malfunctions. The stairs give way, with one man horribly mangled by the gears. Sachs is forced to let her quarry escape as she jumps in to try to help save the victim. She and famed forensic detective Lincoln Rhyme soon learn, however, that the incident may not have been an accident at all, but the first in a series of intentional attacks. They find themselves up against one of their most formidable opponents ever: a brilliant killer who turns common products into murder weapons. As the body count threatens to grow, Sachs and Rhyme must race against the clock to unmask his identity --and discover his mission-- before more people die.

About the Book

As said previously, I love this series. I did have an heart attack when Nick Carelli came back at the beginning and Rhyme and Amelia were at odds, I usually hate when exes come back (ask all the TV series I left because of this) but at the end I did an happy dance.

Imagine a serial killer who has already struck a horrific number of times. A killer who discovers people's secrets -- the deepest, darkest secrets we keep even from ourselves -- and uses them to target and destroy his victims. The case begins with a shock, and the twists keep coming, when FBI Special Agent Smoky Barrett and her team investigate a murder brazenly committed on a flight from Texas to Virginia. Who will the next victim be? Everyone in the world has secrets. Even Smoky.

About the Book

This is the 3rd book in the series. I loved the first book, not really that much the second but I loved this one. I couldn’t stop reading.

As I said before, I love serial killers, reading about them and their motivation. And more killings there are, more I like a book.

Smoky Barrett, an FBI agent, is called by the Director of the FBI himself to solve a very delicate case. A woman is murdered on the plane travelling from Texas to Virginia but is this only the beginning or is the end of the most prolific serial killer in American History?

A new type of serial killer is stalking the streets of New York – one more devious and disturbing than ever before.

They call this butcher The Skin Collector: a tattooist with a chamber of torture hidden deep underground. But instead of using ink to create each masterpiece, the artist uses a lethal poison which will render targets dead before they can even entertain the prospect of escape . . .

Drafted in to investigate, NYPD detective Lincoln Rhyme and his associate Amelia Sachs have little to go on but a series of cryptic messages left etched into the skin of the deceased. As the pair struggle to discover the meaning behind the designs, they are led down a treacherous and twisting path where nothing is as it seems. And with the clock rapidly ticking before the killer strikes again, they must untangle the twisted web of clues before more victims – or they themselves – are next.

About the Book

I forgot how much I loved Lincoln Rhyme!

More I read, more I find out about my “genre”, I like mystery and crime books, that is obvious but I like when there are a few chapters dedicated to the killer. If it’s a serial killer even better. I love when the killer “plays” with the detectives but unfortunately I always choose wrong books…
